There is nothing that compares to the discomfort of an infected tooth. In many cases, the patient is in so much pain they only want the tooth removed so the pain will end. However, when possible, it is always best to keep the natural tooth intact with general dental care. At Seminole Dentistry, we offer root canal therapy (RCT) when appropriate. Not all infected teeth will benefit from RCT; but for those that can be saved, it is a preferred option.
Decay begins on the surface of the tooth and slowly eats its way through the layers until it attacks the nerve center of the tooth (pulp). As decay gets closer to the pulp, symptoms of the problem may become apparent. You may notice sensitivity to the temperatures of foods and beverages. Chewing or biting may cause some discomfort. All of these are signs of a problem.
